Odisha bag 14 medals in Asian Youth Chess Championship

Six players from Odisha returned home today after winning a total of 14 medals, including 10 gold in the Asian Youth Chess Championship, which concluded at Hikkaduwa in Sri Lanka earlier on yesterday. The week-long championship featured competition in three categories -- classical, rapid and blitz.

In the main (classical) category, Odisha players bagged one individual silver and three team gold medals. Rapid category fetched Odisha two silver, one bronze in individual event and three gold in team event. Blitz category delivered three gold in team event.

All six players were able to win one or more medals. Rakesh Kumar Jena of Jajpur was the most successful, collecting a total of five medals, which included three gold, one silver and one bronze in Under-12 open category. Among others, Sankalp Baliarsingh secured two gold one silver in u-12 open category, Rutumbara Bidhar claimed one gold and one silver in u-12 girls category, Anwesha Mishra pocketed two gold in u-10 girls group, Sidhant Mohapatra secured one gold in u-14 open section and Utkal Ranjan Sahoo grabbed one gold in u-16 open section.

RAPID CATEGORY (3 gold+ 2 silver +1 bronze = 6 medals):
Under-10 Girls: Anwesha Mishra (Team gold).
Under-12 Open: Sankalp Baliarsingh (Individual silver and team gold); Rakesh Kumar Jena (Individual bronze and team gold).
Under-12 Girls: Rutumbara Bidhar (Individual silver)

CLASSICAL CAGEGORY (3 gold +2 silver = 5 medals):
Under-12 Open: Rakesh Kumar Jena (Individual silver and team gold); Sankalp Baliarsingh (Team gold).
Under-14 Open: Sidhant Mohapatra (Team gold).
Under-16 Open: Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (Team gold).

BLITZ CATEGORY (3 gold medals):
Under-10 Girls: Anwesha Mishra (Team gold).
Under-12 Open: Rakesh Kumar Jena (Team gold).
Under-12 Girls: Rutumbara Bidhar (Team gold).
